Heineberg Wetlands

Heineberg Wetlands

12 Acres

The Heineberg Wetlands are a fascinating sight for those passing by on VT Route 127, or paddling around the bend of the Winooski River. This complex natural area plays home to a variety of wildlife which rely on the wetland year-round. Floodwaters of spring spread out and saturate the ground here, while muskrat call this their summer haunts, and migratory birds can’t resist the draw of this quiet corner of the river.

There are no formal trails to this natural area though it is valued by birders watching from afar, anglers fishing nearby, and students and naturalists whose programs choose to study this natural community.

Connection

The Heineberg Wetlands are an essential protected area along the Winooski River and are surrounded by other nearby preserved land such as Halfmoon Cove in Colchester and other state-owned parcels.

Access

There is no formal access to this natural area owing to its ecological sensitivity and high conservation value.
