Crescent Woods

Crescent Woods

3.1 Acres

Crescent Woods is a tiny natural area found in a neighborhood in the South End of Burlington, perpendicular to the busy Shelburne St corridor. The footpath follows fox and raccoon tracks to the edge of Englesby Brook, where the sound of traffic is replaced by tinkling water and wind sweeping through monarch pines above. The path continues over an enchanting, while decrepit, historic stone bridge, through a garden of ostrich ferns, and between large maple, ash, and oak trees. Englesby Brook originates from tributary springs seeping from cracks in the redstone bedrock around the hillsides of the neighborhoods just beyond the park.

Connection

Crescent Woods follows the path of the Engelsby Brook which once flowed freely all the way to Oakledge Park, but has since been sunk under fill, culverts, and bridges frequently along its journey to the lake. Today, it is considered an imperiled watershed. Crescent Woods and subsequent green spaces around the brook form the only connected green corridor across the South End. Nearby Redstone Quarry is also tucked into this neighborhood.

Access

This natural area can be accessed via the trailhead on Crescent road where on street parking is offered. A stone staircase leads downslope into the natural area, and stream crossings can be made via stepping-stones. A more informal access point can be made via the sidewalk at the intersection of Prospect Parkway and Shelburne St by taking a path under the locust trees, which crosses private property. Early-morning joggers, nature enthusiasts and dog-walkers enjoy exploring this small gem, hidden in the South End of Burlington.
